Sushi making course details

Date: 10th October 2007
Time: 6.30pm - 10pm
Venue: Hall 15 Function Hall

Course will be hosted by an experienced sushi chef from Sushi Tei.

Tickets for the course will be sold at canteen A, from 1st October to 3rd October, 10am to 5.30pm.

Tickets cost $8 for members, and $10 for non-members.

Goodie bags will also be given to people who sign up for the event at our booth. The goodie bags are sponsored by Lion Corporation and Uni-Mitsubishi and also include a discount voucher by Sushi Tei.

Participants in the course will learn how to make 6 different types of sushi. If you feel that the price is too steep, consider the fact that a colour plate sushi in a sushi restaurant costs $1.90, hence it will cost $11.40 just to eat 6 plates of sushi.

Therefore, our ticket price of $8 for members & $10 for non-memberis is definitely a good deal, especially when there is a discount voucher from Sushi-Tei that will be given to all participants.

JAC will be setting up a booth from Monday, 1st of October to Wednesday, 3rd of October, for people who are interested in joining the sushi making course, which is on the 1oth of October, to sign up then and there. You can find out more details at the booth, but currently here's what we have:

1. Chefs from Sushi Tei will be conducting the course
2. It will be conducted during evening time at Hall 15's function hall

Waseda University Visit details

As mentioned in the previous post, there will be a Waseda University Visit on the 27th and 28th of September.

An Introduction to Waseda
Waseda University, established in 1882, is one of the most prestigious universities in Japan. Its main campus is located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, while other campuses are located at Chuo-ku and Nishitoukyou-shi of Tokyo, Tokorozawa-shi and Honjo-shi of Saitama, and Kitakyushu-shi of Fukuoka Prefecture.

Waseda's literature program is particularly well-known, and its alumni members are as equally renowned. They include five postwar prime ministers, a manga artiste and even one of our own, Singaporean actress Sharon Au.

Program
On the 27th and 28th of September, 15 students from Waseda University will be coming down to NTU for a host visit and JAC is proud to be their tour guides for both days.

Details
We require 15 students to be tour guides on a 1-1 basis with the 15 students from Waseda University.

On the 27th, we will be bringing them around the NTU campus, showing them the various faculties and facilities that NTU has. The program for the 27th starts from 10am and will last until 4pm.

On the 28th, we will be bringing them to several places of interest in Singapore. The program for the 28th starts from 2pm onwards.

Hi guys, it's been a while since the last update.

Well, the subcom recruitment is officially over last Friday and by now, I believe everyone has been informed, whether SMS or email, by your officer-in-charge, whether you have been chosen to be in the subcom or not.

That said, Wednesday night, was the Subcom Night. It was a bit on last minute notice, so thanks to everyone who went down, or rather up to the rooftop of Hall 16. I hoped you guys had fun getting to know the other sub-commers and the people whom you'll be working with.

Manga Drawing Workshop details

As mentioned in the previous post, there will be a manga drawing workshop this Monday, the 27th of August. Details of the workshop are as follows:

Venue: NIE Block 3B level 2*
Capacity: 24 people only due to venue limitation

*Look for the seminar room "The Creek". It's a separate building by itself and is just in front of the NIE canteen. =)

Ok previously I said there need not be any registration, but apparently due to the limited number of seats at the venue, registration is necessary. Interested parties, please send us an email with your name and contacts. We will contact you if selected.

Manga drawing workshop + Subcom recruitment

This is the newly appointed Publications Officer who will now be in charge of maintaining this website. I confess to be unfamiliar with using blogspot, so pardon me while I try to tinker around a bit with this and figure stuff out.

To begin with, JAC will be holding its first mini event of this semester, which is the Manga Drawing Workshop, this coming Monday, the 27th of August, from 7pm-10pm. No fees are required, no registration required, just your presence. It's a bit on short notice, but your attendance at the workshop would be greatly appreciated. Tentatively, the venue has yet to be decided, but when it has, it will be updated here.

Next, we will be holding our sub-committee recruitment this week as well as next week. The first sub-com recruitment drive will be on this coming Thursday and Friday, 23rd and 24th of August, from 5.30-9.30pm at TR 11, NS4-4. Any member who is interested in joining the sub-com may come down during this time to be interviewed for the positions.

Our next round of sub-com recruitment would be on the following Thursday and Friday, the 30th and 31st of August, from 5.30-9.30pm at TR 11, NS4-4.

Dear members,

Thank you all for joining our club. First of all, welcome to JAC 07/08! We would like to invite you to our first club event for the academic year which is our annual general meeting this Thursday, 16 August 2007 from 7pm to 11pm. It will take place at:

School Of Biological Science Classroom 3, SBS-01n-23
(located near cafe by the quad)

Directions: the classroom is on the 1st level of SBS (School of Biological Science) building, just near the "Cafe by the Quad" and the big square near Nanyang Audi.

If you are a freshie, you may use the online "NTU map" to look for the location. We will also put some directions near the place. If you have difficulty finding the place on the day, please contact Ken at 9694 0895. He will help u! =)

Food will be provided for members during the event and this is a good chance to interact with fellow Japanese enthusiasts. There will also be elections for the new main committee.

Natsu Matsuri:
If you have purchased a Summer Festival Ticket, you also need to come down to redeem the ticket with your receipts.

Election:
Of course, if you are running for any main comm positions, this meeting you MUST attend, because all Main Comm members are to be elected on the day, on spot.

Hi all

Our club's booth for iGlobal07 has been a nice success! Thanks all of you for the support! Especial thanks to the main commers and subcommers who have enthusiastically helped out in our booth! =D

It's nice to know that alot of you guys are very interested in Japanese culture, as shown by the zealous crowds queuing up for the Yukata photo-taking and also the eagerness shown on your faces when inquiring about exchange programs and further studies in Japan universities.

Finally, my biggest "thank you" goes to the YOU, our dear supporters of the booth! Thank you so much for your support! I believe you would show the same warm support in our future activities!

NTU iGlobal event on 24th & 25th January

皆さん　明けましておめでとうございます！

Warmest New Year Greetings from Japanese Appreciation Club! JAC wishes you had fruitful 2006 and an even more fulfilling year ahead!

For the last semester, with your support and interest, JAC has held several events successfully. That includes the sub-com recruitment, the Japanese Conversation Workshop (JCW) and last month's trip to Waseda University, Japan. I believe, in this year, we will be able to do better and let more people join our club activities and enjoy the Japanese culture.

Our club will be involved in the NTU iGlobal event on the 24th & 25th of January. iGlobal is an event aimed at increasing awareness and encourage participation in the exchange programs available to the various countries and universities. This event is organized by NTU International Relation Office and JAC will be in charge of the Japan booth.

Members are invited to our booth to enjoy the following:

1. Free Yukata Photo taking

We will prepare several pieces of Japanese traditional Garment: Yukata and offer free photo taking service. Two digital photos of you dressed in beautiful Yukata will be sent to your designated email account shortly after the event.

2. Meiji Chocolates sales

At the booth, we will be selling some Oishii Japanese chocolates and sweets. The products will be sold at flat price because the club actually subsidizes the price. So please do not let go the chance to buy some cheap and yummy chocolates!

3. Membership Card distribution and Discount

JAC members who have signed up with us and not yet got their membership cards will be able to come to the booth and collect their membership cards, together with a free piece of chocolates/cookies. We are sorry for the lateness in distribution.

Members who come to the booth can also get a 20% discount on the Meiji Chocolates. So, please don’t hesitate to come!

4. Information on exchange in Japan

At the booth, you will find brochures and booklets etc about exchange program in universities in Japan.

5. Information Talk

On the event day, an informative talk(time to be confirmed) will be held by the Japan booth. The talk will be made up of several powerpoint presentations, about exchange experience in Japan, universities in Japan, JAC’s Waseda Trip, and JAC’s activities etc.

So, if you have a plan to go Japan for exchange, or at least willing to know more about how JAC can bring you closer to Japan related activities in NTU, we engourage you to attend the our talk. It will be informative, enriching and fun. Promise! If you have any questions and queries about going Japan for exchange, there will also be students who have gone to Japan for exchange, and even exchange students from Japan to answer your questions! It’s also a good chance to make some friends.

The time slot of the information talk will be updated once confirmed.

So, after my introduction about iGlobal Japan booth, you should have a rough idea about what we are offering there. So, do come to our booth! We will be waiting for you all there!

Leadership & Technology Management Study Trip in Japan

Last December, some of our NTU students took part in a 6 day exchange trip to Tokyo, Japan. Here is an account by our president, Peidong:

We visited two universities, Soka University and Waseda University. Soka University impressed all of us with their friendliness and hospitality. The students prepared very fruitful discussion sessions and we enjoyed interacting with them. The university campus was extremely beautiful and provided a very condusive environment for learning. There were very comfortable lounges, reading rooms and libraries for students to do reading and learn language etc.

We had a wonderful and fun session at Soka University discussing about leadership qualities and our role models. We also discussed how leadership differs between Japan, a typical Asian country and Singapore, a more westernized one. We also had the chance to try some hands-on activities in teams for a manufacturing competition. Through that, we were able to learn how to work better and more efficiently in a team and produce better results.

The other university we visited, Waseda University, has a longer history than NTU and we strongly felt the long history of traditions and academic atmosphere on our campus tour. We agreed that this is rarely felt in NTU, perhaps because NTU is newer, therefore Waseda University really gave us another perspective.

Other than our campus tours, we also visited 2 companies, Olympus and NTT DoCoMo. NTT DoCoMo was the most impressive event through the trip. We were impressed by two major points: first, the advanced technology of the mobile phone industry in Japan. In Japan, a 3G phone is almost a necessary for everyone by which they can watch TV, download music, etc etc. In the company show room, the company also showed us some new concepts of products for the years to come. The kind of creativity really amazed everyone of us. Secondly, in the show room, we were attended by several extremely friendly and graceful attendants who showed us around. The spirit and quality of service is so amazing that we believe that probably we could not find that any where else in the world. NTT really demonstrate how the technology is being managed and transformed into industry and business.

Overall, the trip was a tremendous success through which all of us had fun touring tokyo and learning about leadership and technology management. Most importantly, this trip served to deepen the friendship between our universities and also the two countries.

Successful Completion of Japanese Conversation Workshop

Dear friends,

Yesterday 's exciting session officially marked the end of the Japanese Conversation Workshop (JCW) presented by NTU Japanese Appreciation Club (JAC). I am delighted to say that it was an extremely fun and fruitful workshop!

During the 4 fun and exciting evenings we spent together, all of us were able to learn a lot of fun stuffs in Japanese language, share our passion in it, get a chance to speak the language to our ever-helpful native Japanese instructors, and most importantly, make many new friends through our shared interest in Japanese! As the president of JAC, and of course, a crazy fan of Japanese language, there could be nothing more exciting and fulfilling for me than that! Gosh, am I thrilled! ^_^

Here, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the following people who have contributed enormously to the success of JCW:

Firstly, I'd like to say a million thanks to Masaaki, Hiroki and Yanto. Without your help, there wouldn't be a JCW in the first place. Masaaki's passion and perfect bilingual proficiency; Hiroki's sound knowledge of contemporary Japanese as a native Japanese brought up in Japan; Yanto's solid foundation in Japanese with professional tutoring experience; all of them were amazing and were unquestionably the key contributors to our success! You guys indeed brought a lot of knowledge and laughter to our participants! Thank you soooo much! ^_^

Secondly, I'd like to show appreciation to my JAC main committee. You guys have helped me a great deal in publicizing the event and performing the administrative duties. Especial appreciation goes to our dear Honorary General Secretary, Wei Ling, for her help in the huge volumes of paper work pertaining to JCW! Otsukaresamadeshita!

Thirdly, I would like to thank Ms Pauline Ho from the International Relation Office, Mrs. Lam from Student Affairs Office, Madam Lee, NTU Japanese courses coordinator, and all the officers and instructors who have been so supportive of our club's activities. I really appreciate your help and look forward to your continuous support in our club future activities!

Finally, my biggest "thank you" goes to the dear participants of JCW. Thank you so much for your participation! I hope you've learnt knowledge, have had fun and have made many new friends! Also, I hope that through the workshop, your interest in the Japanese language/culture has deepened. Once again, I am genuinely happy to see you guys enjoying our workshop sessions!

There will be no classes during recess week, classes will resume after recess week.
A forfeit of S$1 will be imposed on participants who fail to show up. This is to cover our material costs.
Those who have signed up but failed to turn up during the first session are deemed to have given up. In which case other members will be admitted to the course.

Japanese culture at Asian Civilisations Museum

The Asian Civilisations Museum will be hosting a variety of japanese related events in conjuction with their upcoming exhibition "Hidden Faces: The Art of Japanese Masks".

JAPANESE CONVERSATIONAL WORKSHOP

Attention all Japanese lovers!!

This workshop is perfect for Japanese learners who want to improve their Japanese oral skills! What’s more, this interactive workshop will provide you a chance to know more people, not to mention all the evenings of fun and laughter! Hah!

This workshop is conducted by NTU’s very own students! Our 2 instructors and 2 assistants come from diverse backgrounds:

(A) Native Japanese speakers

Okazaki Masaaki -- a half-Japanese who studied in pure Japanese-speaking primary and secondary school in Thailand. He is this year’s NTU freshman and he speaks perfect English as well.
Kitaura Hiroki --an exchange student from Soka University, Japan.

(B) Accomplished learners

Yang Peidong -- JLPT 1, overseas exchange experience in Kansai Gaidai University, Japan.
Yanto Jakop – JLPT 2, Champion of the Japanese Speech Contest 2006 organized by the Japanese Association Singapore (シンガポール日本人会).

CCONTENTS:

This workshop focuses on daily conversations that are surely useful but not so much taught in NTU LJXX course. We also provide specials like sessions on Arubaito language and honorific Japanese. You are promised with interesting course materials!

If you dream to speak native-like informal Japanese, there is no reason why you should hesitate to join.

4 consecutive Tuesdays, Sept 12^th, 19^th, 26^th and Oct 3^rd
Session A: 6-7pm
Session B: 7-8pm

Hello and welcome to the NTU Japanese Appreciation Club's new web site. We've decided to move from our old web site as we believe this will not only keep members updated but also facilitates interaction and feedback between our members.
